Solar Returns in the Horoscope
How to Make the Year Better?
The Solar Return (Solar Revolution) method is one of the primary forecasting tools in astrology, and in recent years it has become increasingly popular and intriguing for both students of astrology and those who simply wish to use it to improve their lives. What actually is a Solar Return? Every year, when the Sun crosses our exact natal degree - down to the precise minute and second - a star chart with specific constellations is formed in the sky. This chart largely determines what will happen to us during the upcoming year. Some astrologers even view this chart as a annual natal horoscope. Because this star chart changes its form depending on geographic coordinates, this method allows us to directly influence our destiny by selecting an appropriate location to spend our birthday. For this reason, as far back as ancient times, Arabian astrologers studied Solar Returns and sent their clients on long journeys to save them from danger or to create opportunities for success and victory.
Among modern astrologers, the Solar Return method has many devoted practitioners. Some are well known for their research and follow the method almost fanatically for themselves and their clients. There are also astrologers who favor astrocartography, according to which permanently relocating to specific regions of the world alters our destiny for better or worse.
Today, it is fashionable to talk about Active Astrology because, as modern people, we believe that we can and should actively shape our world rather than passively endure events. Proponents of so-called Active Astrology offer various approaches to counteract difficult influences in a horoscope. Some of these recommendations make sense, while others sound melodramatic and should only be followed if one is truly convinced of their benefit. For me, spending one's birthday in a location that shifts the Solar Return in the desired direction offers the single most powerful opportunity to influence our destiny. It is a far superior method to dressing in black and staring at mournful paintings during a heavy Saturn transit (as followers of Thorwald Dethlefsen suggest), or living in an elevator-less house to work off a Mars-Saturn conjunction in the Fourth House. Of course, there are other good recommendations for mitigating severe astrological influences. With a Solar Return, however, we directly rewrite the year's messages - on the principle that what is not promised in the annual horoscope likely will not occur, and conversely, success will come if it is encoded for the year.
The method is sound, and every practicing astrologer is convinced of its results. Clients who have experienced a year with a strong Solar Return know how effortlessly achievements come during such periods. Because we live in an era of abundant and accessible information, many people assume that selecting a Solar Return location is lighthearted and simple. Nowadays, almost every astrology software package includes a module for calculating Solar Returns along with standard guidance notes. Consequently, in recent years I increasingly encounter people who have "calculated" their annual charts and simply want to verify minor details. Others have heard that traveling anywhere for their birthday is enough to alter their fate.
It is important to understand that Astrology is not a collection of superstitions, but mathematics - there is no need to leave one's city every single year just to secure a flawless annual chart. The act of traveling itself is irrelevant; altering destiny is achieved strictly through the geographical coordinates of where you spend the moment of the return. Therefore, traveling to nearby places like Thessaloniki, Plovdiv, or Skopje will not yield meaningful change, as their coordinates do not significantly alter the annual chart. The trip itself may be a pleasant gift, but to truly modify the annual horoscope, 95% of cases require destinations as distant as Vienna, Rome, or even much farther. Let us emphasize again that we are seeking coordinates that alter the chart in specific ways, not picking a vacation spot - though combining both is ideal if possible. Some people read software interpretations suggesting that traveling to Barcelona will give them, for example, Aquarius rising, and assume this will automatically benefit their business. In truth, the annual Rising Sign itself is not a particularly critical factor. Nor is it vital whether Venus falls in the Second or Third House of the Solar Return. These placements will offer little help if the annual Ascendant lands in the natal Eighth or Twelfth House, or if a malefic planet is placed on an angle or in an unfavorable house. Precisely because this method is so powerful, it is not a toy. It is unwise to gamble with destiny without the most basic understanding of the intricate relationships between natal and annual horoscopes.
Selecting the proper location for a Solar Return is among the most challenging and controversial techniques in astrology. The selection rules are numerous, and in most cases, it is complex to figure out where to place unfavorable constellations and how to balance life factors through planetary positioning. It is best to choose a chart through active dialogue with the client, as only they know which area of life requires support and opportunity, and where they simply cannot handle setbacks. Some astrologers fanatically recommend locations that are mathematically almost perfect, even if it means sending someone to a remote island in Fiji. Such advice can be good, but only if it does not place an excessive financial or logistical strain on one's life. In most instances, moderation is key, because alongside the Solar Return, transits and directions are active throughout the year - their influences are crucial and must be evaluated together. If transits and directions are highly promising, it makes sense to invest in a powerful annual chart to lock in success. Sometimes, long-distance travel is justified to avert major dangers during the year, such as lawsuits or health issues. Nevertheless, travel should remain within one's practical means, rather than upending one's finances and life for long journeys in hopes of magically changing fate through a Solar Return.
What are the key rules to evaluate when selecting a Solar Return?
First and foremost, it is essential to analyze the connections between the natal chart and the annual chart. Keep in mind that whatever is promised in the annual chart - money, marriage, children, business success - cannot be guaranteed unless it is already promised in the natal chart. One of the most important components of the annual horoscope is its Ascendant - not the zodiac sign of the Ascendant, as popular opinion holds, but the specific natal house in which that annual Ascendant falls, along with the aspects (harmonious or challenging) it forms with natal planets. This largely shapes the trajectory of your year. An annual Ascendant falling in the natal Sixth, Eighth, or Twelfth House often points to a year of hardship and illness. An Ascendant in the cardinal First, Fourth, Seventh, or Tenth House signifies pivotal years filled with new directions, though it does not guarantee the year will be easy or that success is certain. If the annual Ascendant forms a harmonious aspect with a natal planet, it promises ease and good fortune, whereas a hard aspect to malefic planets portends stress and potential twists of fate.
If the majority of planets in the Solar Return fall in cardinal houses, the year will be filled with change, new projects, new relationships, and dynamic situations requiring quick decisions and the ability to pivot one's life path. These are years for initiating new endeavors, launching businesses, and taking key directions; they are event-packed and significant, but can also cause exhaustion due to a lack of time for rest and reflection.
If most planets fall in the Second, Fifth, Eighth, or Eleventh Houses, the year emphasizes completing ongoing projects and expending effort to finalize ventures begun in earlier periods.
If planets cluster in the Third, Sixth, Ninth, or Twelfth Houses, the main theme is preparation, gathering information, or pursuing education to launch new initiatives in a future cycle. During these years, conditions fluctuate constantly, which can cause irritation and frustration at times, but can also bring travel, lightheartedness, and a freedom from heavy commitments.
It is especially vital to avoid annual charts with heavy planetary concentrations in the Sixth, Eighth, and Twelfth Houses - and according to Italian astrologer Ciro Discepolo, the First House as well. Such configurations herald trials, and it is best to avoid spending a Solar Return under those placements.
The house placement of the Sun - the most critical planet in the Solar Return - is of paramount importance. Its house represents the focal area of growth and development for the year. Naturally, some houses are more favorable than others, but multiple factors must be weighed. If the Sun is placed in the Tenth House of the Solar Return, it can bring an important promotion, business expansion, and the ability to steer one's destiny through personal actions - provided other factors in the chart align favorably. However, under difficult aspects, this highly sought-after placement can instead lead to a loss of status or sudden downturns in business. The Sun in the Eighth House of the annual chart can signal surgeries and intense stress, or conversely, substantial wealth, investments, or the birth of a child, depending on surrounding chart factors. The Sun in the Ninth House is in its joy, promising years filled with learning, overseas travel, spiritual evolution, freedom, and enthusiasm. Yet, if an individual's priority is securing employment or business growth, selecting the Tenth House is preferable, even though it will demand much greater effort during the year.
The benefics, Venus and Jupiter, bring luck and expansion when situated near the Ascendant or Midheaven (MC) of the chart, but it is even better to place them directly in the specific life area where expansion is desired - such as love, children, or business. Be aware, however, that placing them in a preferred house often forces malefic planets into undesirable sectors of the chart. Planets in a chart are interconnected, and one cannot simply pick a dream placement without evaluating where problematic factors will land.
Having malefic planets positioned less than 4 degrees from the chart's angular points is considered exceptionally hazardous. Additionally, if the Solar Return contains hard conjunctions of Mars with Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto, extreme care must be taken when placing them so that their negative energy is minimized and blocked as much as possible.
