Significators of Karmic Lessons in the Horoscope
Significators of Karmic Lessons in the Horoscope
The significators of karmic lessons in the horoscope are the North and South Lunar Nodes, retrograde transpersonal planets, Pluto, Chiron, Lilith, and the Vertex. Because the topic of the lunar nodes has been extensively covered and commented on in many books, I would like to focus on several other karmic indicators within the natal chart.
Love. Clients frequently ask me whether the person they are in love with or in a relationship with is known to them from past lives, or if they are their soulmate. A great deal has been written on the subject of soulmates, but this is not a topic that occupies serious astrology. There is no way to determine through specific mathematical connections whether someone is our soulmate, twin flame, and so on. In karmic astrology, specific connections and placements between two horoscopes involving karmic significators are taken into account. For example, if personal planets and the Ascendant in one person's chart form aspects with Saturn, Pluto, or the Lunar Node in the other person's chart, the connection is considered to have existed in past lives. These aspects imply specific lessons and relationship dynamics in this lifetime.
If the aspects are harmonious, these can be relationships of mutual support and energetic nourishment in this life. It is wonderful to have such people in our immediate circle. Very often, when we unexpectedly receive help or kindness from relative strangers, it involves precisely these types of connections between horoscopes. Tense karmic aspects imply conflict, stress, and friction where you often find yourself unable to change the situation, yet unable to walk away. In almost all marital synastries, there is at least one or two tense karmic aspects - perhaps an indication that marriage is one of life's most profound lessons. In these cases, the aspects manifest strangely: at first, the partners are enchanted with each other, sensing incredible similarity, only to end up a year or two later in deep disagreement.
Parent-child relationships also typically feature very precise, tense karmic aspects. Sometimes this may explain why certain children attempt to take control within these dynamics. In romantic relationships, aspects formed by Saturn in one chart to the Moon or Venus in the other can be particularly challenging. These will be experienced as coldness, rejection, and criticism by the person whose Moon or Venus is affected, while the Saturn person may simply be feeling an unconscious fear of abandonment or an inferiority complex. Sometimes, over many years, people may enter our lives who consistently form specific karmic aspects to our personal planets. This usually indicates an internal issue we need to resolve - a wound or past trauma to heal, or a shift in how we process what hurts us. Once we do this, such people stop entering our lives. We have turned a new page.
A particularly sensitive point in the horoscope regarding past incarnations is the Imum Coeli (IC). When one of the luminaries or a planet in one person's chart is conjunct the IC of another's, it generally indicates that the two were members of the same family. In many cases, such conjunctions foster deep friendship and strong attachment. In this life, however, one person may be required to care for the other. Very often at birth, the mother's progressed Moon coincides with her baby's IC.
In cases of very strong karmic connections - whether for good or ill - the luminaries or a planet in one chart fall conjunct the South Node in the second chart. This is a definitive indication that the two souls have spent many lifetimes together. Usually, most conjunctions with the South Node are not entirely pleasant. Frequently, the karma involves wrapping up a relationship with a soul to whom we were negatively bound in the past. It is wise to exercise caution if a malefic planet from another chart forms a conjunction within an orb of 2–3 degrees to our South Node. In such cases, relationship dynamics in this life can become complicated due to sudden separation. The person whose planet aligns with the node may harbor unconscious feelings of revenge or resentment. Nonetheless, the karmic debt belongs to the person with the node, who would do well to practice patience. Conversely, someone whose planet aligns with your North Node can play a highly positive role in your life, especially if it is a benefice planet. The two souls may have agreed to assist each other in this incarnation.
When considering whether a new partner is our soulmate - a feeling many people experience at the start of a relationship - it is best to examine the natal and progressed Vertex. This sensitive point is usually linked to so-called "fated love" and typically indicates a love carried over from another life for a specific karmic purpose. If the bond is truly predestined, whether it lasts a lifetime or brings happiness, progressed or transiting conjunctions to the natal Vertex, progressed Vertex, or a progressed Vertex aligning with a natal planet in either chart will be present at its beginning. Thus, if we see the progressed Vertex approaching a conjunction with a luminary or a planet associated with love, we can predict the arrival of love in our lives. Obviously, if love begins when the Vertex aligns with natal Saturn, the relationship will not be filled with easy joy, though it may hold great significance for the soul's evolution. Some of life and love's most valuable lessons are learned through profound grief. The concept of a soulmate is not limited to happiness and joy. Souls can share predestined, fated connections with exceptional love between them, yet the karma unfolding can bring loss as well as gain.
The twelfth house of the horoscope symbolizes the most recent incarnation. If planets in one chart align with the cusp of the twelfth house in another, it indicates that the two souls were together in the life immediately preceding this one.
